The University of Utah has become the first US college to offer scholarships for competitive video gaming.
This is the most high-profile entry into college eSports in the United States to date. To start with the university plans on creating its own varsity eSports team to play League of Legends and compete in the Riot Games Collegiate League.
Assuming the scheme proves successful they will then move into other games. And dont worry if you dont plan on going to Utah any time soon, with this being one of the highest profile sporting university’s (part of the POWER FIVE) in the US many more will soon follow.
Collegiate eSport teams are still a need breed, but a growing number of US colleges are beginning to support their student gamers.

Gamers can receive partial scholarships to begin with, they will eventually be able to sign up for marketing deals once a certain level of growth is achieved.
Funding for the student gamers will come from Utah’s entertainment arts and engineering department, which is known as a leader in video game design.
