eSports is predicted to generate more than £1 BILLION globally and begin reaching audiences of around 600 million people over the next two years.
eSports figures from 2016 show that it generated over $490m in revenue, with a worldwide audience of more than 300 million people. Want to know what eSports are?
Prize money was just as huge too! around $90m was won last year, and the prizes are only expected to grow too! Its worth noting that this does still pale in comparison to say footballers. They can earn millions every month but the eSports Pro Gamers tend to share a port of prize money between a team.
Wheres the real money at?
The real money in eSports is currently driven by a sponsorship frenzy as thousands of brands try to get a foothold in the eSports community. Household names and new contenders are paying Pro Gamers to use their kit or wear their emblem, and as the management structure of the gamers becomes more streamlined and professional the amount a brand will have to pay to get on a top player is only going to skyrocket.
Whats driving this explosion of growth? Long running events like the Valve Dota 2 Championships, the LoL World Champs and the EVO tournament have been expanding massively over the past 10 years BUT its new tournaments like the NBA 2K which is really slinging eSports into the spotlights.
With this expansion into mainstream sporting comes the power of familiar faces, team names and even sporting venues, theres a surprising amount of people who dont know whats being spoken about when they hear about “eSport” but that will quickly change when mainstream sporting giants like the NBA start pushing the message.
